If you are struggling with speaking in public, with formulating and structuring your thoughts in a persuasive way, this is the course for you! Debate is a useful communication technique that can help you in your professional development and future career, no matter your academic background. During this three days long intensive, interactive course based on participatory and deliberative methodologies, the participants will improve their critical thinking, argumentation, rhetoric, public speaking and debating skills.

First day:
Argumentation, Rhetoric & Introduction to Debate

Joint session: introductions (09:00 - 09:30)
Joint session: introduction to argumentation & key principles of rhetoric (09:30 - 10:30)
(10:30 - 11:00 short break)
Joint session: quiz and discussion (11:00 - 12:30)
(12:30 - 14:00 lunch break)
Joint session: introduction to debate (14:00 - 15:00)
Individual assignment: watching and analyzing a debate
Individual assignment: list of topics/issues/contemporary controversies of interest

Second day:
Fallacies, (Mis)Communication & Public Speaking Anxieties

Joint session: introduction to fallacies (09:00 - 10:00) & fallacies quiz (10:00 - 10:30)
(10:30 - 11:00 short break)
Joint session: (mis)communication issues & public speaking anxieties (11:00 - 12:30)
Individual assignment: 2 speeches preparation (5 minutes each)
Team assignment: debate preparation (5 minute speech per speaker)
18:00 deadline for individual assignments submission

Third day:
Speech delivery & (Competitive & Non-Competitive) Debate

Individual speech feedback sessions (09:00 - 11:00)
Joint session: articulation, pace and voice exercises (11:00 - 12:00)
(12:00 - 13:30 lunch break)
Joint session: debates (13:30 - 15:00)
Joint session: course closure and final remarks (15:00 - 16:00)

The Trainer:


Dr. Maja Nenadović

Dr. Maja Nenadović is an experienced global trainer, debate coach, consultant, researcher with 18 years of experience who has worked in 40+ countries worldwide.
She regularly implements trainings, seminars and workshops in civic education, human rights education, critical pedagogy, peace education and also works as facilitator and moderator of conferences, expert meetings, and of organizational strategy and transition management.
Since 2012, she has developed and implemented Applied Debate - Training Workshops for Depolarizing Communication in more than 20 countries worldwide. In the past several years, she has also worked as a program design and global philanthropy consultant for various private foundations in the domains of peace education, peacebuilding and (youth) civic engagement.
Maja holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam, on the subject of Monitoring & Evaluation in the area of democracy promotion and democratization projects. She is the Secretary General of the Board of the International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE).
She has working knowledge and ability in English, Croatian, Dutch, Spanish and Hungarian languages.


Social program 

It is expected that after following this short, intensive course, the students will be able...
1. To construct arguments and recognize basic elements of rhetoric, argumentation and persuasion techniques;
2. To understand fallacies and logical reasoning mistakes and be able to recognize and qualify them in everyday use;
3. To construct, structure, contextualize and deliver a speech;
4. To prepare, research, organize and conduct a debate.
